An elderly client of ours we look after called us to see if we could look at his boiler as a service engineer wanted to £80 just to look at the boiler !! a disgrace, we understand that engineers have to be paid but taking £80 just to travel to the clients house was ridiculous.
The boiler was very old at least 20years and kept cutting out so we assumed it was a flow sensor but we noticed that someone had changed the flue at some stage and it had a slight incline. After looking with a borescope we saw that the flue elbow had corroded and so the emission fumes were leaking back into the air intake. VERY DANGEROUS so we pulled the fuse and told him he could not use the boiler until we could source another elbow from Main. Luckily and i still cannot believe that Plumb Center had one in stock as they normally have to order every part !!
The part cost £40 and once the boiler fired up and we proved it working we charged £80 for the mornings work, as he is a good client but more importantly the client had warmth during the winter.
